Mystery Science Theater 3000 Capsule Review – Episode 1202: Atlantic Rim

Episode 2 is an Asylum film – maker of cheap and cheesy rip-off movies, and the actually not terrible Z Nation (seriously, it’s much more fun than the Walking Dead). And as you may have guessed from the title, this is a cheap and cheesy Pacific Rim knock off, with a touch of Godzilla and by the end, the first Avengers film. The CGI is terrible and never believable, but is at least a break from ugly alien puppets. It eschews plot and coherence for poorly filmed action and stock footage, as well as sweaty actors on small sound stages. Pacific Rim was an enjoyable if kind of silly movie, but this makes it seem like a masterpiece in retrospect, with great character work and a generally comprehensible story line. The immediate drawback of the film –...

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Capsule review – Episode 1201: Mac and Me

Of course I’m watching the new MST3K season, and as I do, I’m posting my reviews. Here we go with the first one. No movie spoilers, if you want it to be a surprise, but honestly – none of these movies are worth it. ** The rebooted Mystery Science Theater 3000 is back, with a shorter six episode season. They hand wave away the cliffhanger the Kinga/Jonah , which may annoy people, but it feels like a very MST3K to do. (And it may come back – this is episode one, after all.) It’s not important, let’s move on. So we do, and the first movie up is the epic piece of shit known as Mac and Me, a crass McDonald’s sponsored rip off of E.T. I’ve known about this film but never seen it, although I felt like I had. Truth is, I hadn’t. Wow....

A Work In Progress preview …

So far I’ve given you little glimpses of the manuscript in progress, but here is a much bigger piece, where the gang meet Alex for the first time, and get to know their god … kind of. It’s always odd when a god you’ve never heard of, who can crush you like a bug, shows up on your doorstep.    ** There was a stranger sitting on their purple velvet sofa, though. It was either a slightly effeminate man or a slightly butch woman, attractive either way, in spite of the nose ring. They had dreadlocks held back in what looked like a ponytail, and awesome yellow boots. The person looked at them with a sunny, guileless smile, and Logan wasn’t sure if they were in their late teens or early twenties. Logan had opened his mouth to say...

Latest piece of the WIP

Esme uses her evil eye … and goddamn, we all need them. (Full marks to anyone who sees the Transmetropolitan homage in this.)           There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, but no people, so that was a bit of a break. “Damn, the pavement is really hot,” Lyn commented.   “Should have worn shoes,” Ahmed said, unhelpfully.   Lyn glared at him. “Next time I’ll wear Crocs.”   “Don’t you fucking dare,” Ahmed snapped. He hated Crocs and flip flops with an equal passion. Mainly because they were so damn ugly, and Logan agreed with him, but honestly, he didn’t care either way. Not true for Ahmed, who seemed to take every fashion faux paus personally. Except he’d given up complaining about Logan’s...

Next WIP snippet …

In this one, Lyn and Logan muse about Ahmed’s misanthropy.   ** Also, much like no one warded against harpies, no one warded against mummies – or the mummy cursed – either. Since he was sand, he could travel through this house a lot faster than them too, and never trigger a trap. “Hey, Ahmed, you wanna check out the upper floors?” Logan asked. “At the rate we’re going, we’ll get there by Tuesday.”   He sighed, which was always a neat trick since he didn’t technically breathe, and said, “Fine. What am I looking for again?”   “A nasty book that gives off mucho bad mojo,” Lyn said.   “Should I destroy it?”   “No, we might need it,” Logan admitted.   He rolled his eyes. “Of course we do. We need all the bad...
